After bulk packaging, some Commercial pecan shellers opt to sterilize their pecans with Propylene Oxide. While loaded with pecans, a vacuum is pulled on the chamber. Propylene Oxide is injected inside, and allowed to sit for a prescribed number of minutes. This effectively kills any organisms residing on the pecan or packaging.
